HUMANITARIAN WORK FOR 2011

Our humanitarian work for January and February means planning for the coming year and searching for new projects.

In January we contributed more assistance for the Shkoder flood victims. We took packages of towels and soap to the most needy camp of flood evacuees. This distribution was better organized and worked much better than the first blanket distribution. We also took another load of blankets to the neighborhood where we were short in number the first distribution. They all seemed grateful for the help we gave.

Our first project for 2011 was to the “House of Love” and orphanage run by the Missionaries of Charity (Mother Theresa’s order) in the city of Elbasan. They give very loving care to 30 orphans but they have some rules limiting the use of modern conveniences like a washing machine or dryer. There were still many items we were able to provide. Some of the things we gave them were baby shoes, blankets, heaters, sheets, baby clothes, walkers and playpens. Some of the seminary age girls from Elbasan are now giving weekly service to the orphanage. We are happy when our projects lead to service from local members.

A shipment of 270 wheelchairs has arrived and cleared customs with the help of the local Red Cross. The bulk of them are donated to the Red Cross for their distribution and some are for the Roma Union and a few kept for our use for church members or their families. Our donations also included two styles of crutches.

So we press on searching for the needy and new projects. As you can see we do a lot of shopping and there is usually a pile of items in one corner of our living room waiting for distribution..
